Yeah, hate on Cate right now haha
But I still have some hope! Sandra is very beloved by the industry and she carries almost the entire film by her own (plus, THE film, the film of the year I would say). Also, she is the entertainer of the year and the two films that she made this year were blockbusters
Fingers crossed!

Washington DC Film Critics Association announced the winners (nomination announced previously). As expected, Sandy didn't win again (Cate won), but Alfonso and some others won for "Gravity." www.dcfilmcritics.com/awards/Best Director Best Cinematography Best Editing

It's sad that Sandy didn't won anything. I wonder is She will win any of the big award like SAG, GG or Oscar. I remember that back in 2009 I didn't even heard about this low key award like NY or LA critics. First big won award was at Critics Choice, then SAG, GG and Oscars.

In 2009, one of the reasons why Sandy's Oscar win (as well as GG, Critics Choice & SAG) is considered for her popularity not for her performance was that she didn't win any those critics society awards. If you look at most of those Oscar winners, they usually win a lot prior to those bigger awards. And this time, her performance in "Gravity" is well-respected, but still isn't really considered as great as others. Also, those "critics" are basically snobby imo. Anyway, as far as I gather information, the best bet Sandy wins would be Golden Globe, just because they are more "star-friendly" people. I personally don't think she'll win anything this time. I'd think she'd be pleased if Alfonso wins more than her own thing. And this is another critics awards; Online Film Critics.... I mean, who are they? Maybe even one of us could be that. And I'm offended that they didn't nominate Sandy. www.awardscircuit.com/2013/12/09/online-film-critics-nominees-short-term-12-and-the-wind-rises-show-up-in-best-picture/

And this one is interesting... St. Louis Film Critics (okay, does each city in US have those critics group?) nominations. www.awardsdaily.com/blog/the-st-louis-film-critics-nominations/Best Film Best Director Best Actress Best Cinematography Best Visual Special Effects Best Musical Score Best Scene (opening tracking shot) And, they have comedy category and "The Heat" is nominated!!

And this is a big deal. "Gravity" is named oneo of the top 10 movies of the year by AFI (American Film Institute). www.afi.com/afiawards/"12 Years a Slave" "American Hustle" "Captain Phillips" "Fruitvale Station" "Gravity""Her" "Inside Llewyn Davis" "Nebraska" "Saving Mr. Banks" "The Wolf of Wall Street"

I think that the fact that Sandra didn't win any of those critics awards is because they always choose other kind of performance, they always pick winners of independent films, like more drama films, actors/actress who are revelations or "new". This awards usually do not coincide with the Oscar, the Globes, etc. Even 12 Years a Slave (which is the biggest threat to Gravity) didn't won any of those.
Anyway I don't think it hurts her chances at the big awards. Even the Oscar sometimes (even more in the last decade) don't pick the "better" performance, there are a lots of factors that influence, like the popularity of the film, the box office, the popularity of the nominated, some kind of guilty for something, etc. This year Sandra has on her side the fact that Gravity was well loved by the critics AND the public, also a big hit at the box office. Also there are a lot of members than are going to watch the film because of the technical categories and if they are allow to vote in the best actress categorie, they would probably vote for her.
Like I said, I still have hope but I am always positive about those things lol I have a feeling (or maybe I just want this to happen) that Gravity will win everything at the Oscar: Picture, Director, Actress, Editing, Production Desing, Cinematography, Score, Sound Editing and Mixing, Visual Effects and maybe Original Screenplay. This has not happened in a while (since 2003 with The Lord of the Rings, in 2008 Slumdog almost made it) and Gravity have the potential to do it. And, like The Lord of the Rings, it is a "special" film because it is not a drama or the kind of films always win Oscars. It is time the Oscars acknowledge this kind of films: Avatar, Life of Pi, Inception and even Hugo are "technological" films and were the frontrunners to win at each year but at the end they didn't. I think Gravity can change that. Alfonso's work is out of this world (like really, really good) and I can't see anyone else winning best director besides him. If he win director then Gravity has to win picture because it is unlikely to give the Oscar to different picture and director two years in a row (last year Argo won picture and Lee won director for Life of Pi, and that happen once in a while at the Oscars). Also Gravity not only is a "technological film", it's also a "sci-fi" and a sci-fi never won the best picture neither, so if Gravity win, would be the first "tech" and also the first "sci-fi", and Alfonso the first Mexican.
But like I said maybe is more like a wish than a feeling haha Anyway, it is all matter of time, we have to wait and see.
PS: I edit to say that I think that Sandra won in 2009 not only because of her popularity (which I agree it helped), also because that was a weak year for the best actress race, I mean, there was not a Cate Blanchett or a Judi Dench with a performance THAT praised. Gaby and Carey were "newest" and Meryl and Helen were already Oscars winners. Also, The Blind Side was a big surprise at the box office.

sbfanargentina, I admire your positive attitude! I usually keep my expectation very low at those things.
But "12 Year a Slave" has a lot of things that help it win. That's why I do hope they will slip the Best Picture and Best Director again this year. I think Alfonso has more chance to win than "Gravity" itself.
Anyway, before talking about the winning, let's hope Sandy & the film will get nominated by SAG and Golden Globes this week!

Yeah, 12 Years is the big threat! McQueen would be the first black director and the Academy would love to acknowledge that too.. but Alfonso's work is just so amazing, the camera work is incredible, the way he put the camera inside the helmet without a cut, the long long shots, the use of the POV, the last 15 minutes are pure perfection, everything about the direction of the film is perfect, he definitely deserves to win. They owe him for the snub for Children of Men lol
Sandra does too, of course. Like I said the other day here, I think Sandra's performance is more difficult to carry out but she still managed to carry the full film on her shoulders and she connected with the public very well (I was reading IMDb's forum the other day and everyone says that they cried in Gravity at the same Sandra's monologue).
Can't wait till SAG and Globes nominations!

I think Alfoso has won several regional critics awards. It's hard to keep track on as there are so many critics association. Now, African-American Film Critics Association chose Sandy as Best Actress. Interesting choice, but I guess there is not many leading roles for African-American actresses this year. But they also chose Jared Leto for Supporting where they had more choice. www.hitfix.com/in-contention/oscar-talk-hustle-wall-street-precursors-and-the-10-best-films-of-2013They're going to have dinner ceremony in January, and I wonder if Sandy will attend it... aafca.com/

Yay! Houston should be the one! lol
It's getting interesting as Alfonso started winning BD while "Gravity" is missing BP. If Alfonso wins the Oscar, Sandy will be sooo happy.
